This was recorded using Voice Memos on the iPhone 3G and was intended to go out on Friday, but since the recording is just over two minutes the file size is a bit larger than Mail on the iPhone was willing to support on a 3G network. So... it goes out today. I did another test using AudioBoo on Saturday but something was off in my settings config on AudioBoo's site so that post did not get pushed to Posterous, Twitter, FB, etc. Hopefully I'll get it all sorted out before My trip to Alaska at the end of the month which is where I'm hoping this will all come in to play to capture all of the cool stuff we're bound to see while we're there.

Music you should hear: The Prodigy - Warriors Dance
New Prodigy, is a lot like the old Prodigy, but a bit more concise. Not quite sure why they have to burn the place down though.
The new album 'Invaders Must Die' is really good especially if you've been a fan of The Prodigy through out their career. Personally I Enjoy the ravey sounds of the group more than the "Electro Punk" sound of the last two albums, not that they didn't have gems like "Firestarter", "Breathe", "Girls" & "The Way It Is" but as a whole album I think the rave vibe works better. Bust out your Baggy Jeans, Trainers and favorite glow products! 3.5 out of 5! -Joe

Another Kicker from Bob Lefsetz:
"If you want to have a fulfilling, enriched life today you don’t start a band, you start a company! Is your desire to date Mariah Carey or have enough money to attract reasonable members of the opposite sex? Do you want to have people tell you what to do or do you want to be in charge of your own destiny? Tech is about innovation. What do they say, "Innovate or die"? Whereas in the music business it’s "I don’t hear a single."
Customer Service is the title of a recent blog entry by Bob Lefsetz, in it he once again draws parallels from the Music & Tech industries, both of which I'm interested in. I really like where Bob is going lately, Since I have my feet in both fields I can relate easily.

TechCrunch: Jason Kincaid takes a First Look at Lala’s iPhone App which will Stream Your Music Library From The Cloud. This is an important step in what is to come for all media. When the dust settles the end result for most users will be on demand cloud stored media. Music, Movies & TV will not be owned by most but streamed and subscribed to on demand. The next couple years will see stepping stones towards this end, but the bottom line will be access to everything everywhere when you want it. But you're saying "Wait this is no good for me, I'm a DJ, I mix and match beats and tempos, I just got use to CD's I can't just stream files and mix them, My Laptop will crash!!!" No worries you'll still be hoarding files, all of your fans however will most likely not. Resistance is Futile.

SMK - 6 Swedes pick up where Kraftwerk left off.
John found this video 1st, which seems to be a really well done fan video. I of course liked the song, dug a little bit deeper and found the 10+ minute live jam version.
The group is called Slagsmålsklubben or SMK, according to their MySpace they're from Stockholm and Berlin and they have a new EP out called Sponsored by Destiny, which is also the name of the song in both the video's above.

Music you should hear: Kutiman - Thru You
So John sent me this link the other day of a guy named Kutiman who grabbed You Tube clips of people playing instruments or singing and chopped both the video and audio of these clips into new songs and video's. When john sent me the link the original site was already down. I thought nothing of it, then John sent me a new link this morning. After watching all 7 videos I'm truly inspired. It's pretty amazing that Kutiman was able to make such interesting songs out of all these random bits of music. Using You Tube as your source material is a pretty savvy move as well. I'm immediately reminded of DJ Shadow & EBN, creating music solely of samples. It's refreshing and well worth a listen or two.

Making Music is Good
Just finished working on one of John's songs called Almost Better. I added some atmospheric layers to it, a handful of synths and tweaked the drums a bit. Think NIN's hurt meets The Cure's Lullaby. I think it's going to turn out really nice.
This makes 9 songs so far that are arranged and nearing completion that have been started in the month of February. This RPM Challenge is turning our to be pretty cool. We're under the gun now to finish these up and get them mixed be by the 28th. The pressure is on. Woo-Hoo!

Listening to Today: Sleepmakeswaves
For my My Music Nerds... and fans of Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, etc.
Found these guys on Phlow Magazine. Great Instrumental music, very prog rock, great players and so on. This is refreshing to me because I've been listening to so much jazz lately that Sleepmakeswaves satisfy the complexity I'm apparently in the mood for but has enough electronics and ambience to make it fresh, modern and most of all optimistic, which is something I'm also really after in music lately.
Enjoy!

DSP-049 House of Cards (850 Billion and Counting)
Hey Kids Whats Happening! Welcome to the another episode of Datasound Podcast, I'm your host Joe Shockley binging you the latest and greatest in alternative music from around the world.
It's been a while... I know, and to make matters worse I'm coming back with a vengeance and I'm not really going to do much talking. Today on the show instead of focusing on all things new, I'm focusing on all things Political and Critical.
When I turn on the news or even open up my browser I'm bombarded by end of the world scenarios as the worlds economy collapses and I can't help but hear Radiohead's House of Cards in my head.
Inspired by the great fleecing of America by Bankers and Politicians I've put together a mix of songs that I think really set the mood for what many people in this country and around the world are feeling. So with that in mind, grab your Head Phones, Maybe go to the Gym or better yet, turn off all the lights like you did when you were a kid, sit, listen and just think for a while.

DSP-044: Ghosts I-IV
Today on the show we have new music from Nine Inch Nails.
Last night, which was Sunday March 2nd, Trent and Company surprised fans with the release of a new Album entitled Ghosts Volumes 1-4, featuring 36 tracks of instrumental music spread across 4 volumes and available in multiple formats, including a semi immediate download from both NIN.com and the Amazon MP3 store. As you van imagine Trent's servers were instantly flooded and by 10 PM when I was attempting to download the album the site was basically moving at a crawl, so I bought the Album from Amazon.
There are several note worthy mentions about this release, Trent is releasing this album himself, It's available in mutliple formats including a free download of the 1st 9 songs, a deluxe and ultra deluxe package including a 2 CD package along with a Data DVD of Multi Track Sessions, a blu-ray dvd with slide show, and an Art Book. Plus it's it's being released as a bit torrent and is licensed under creative commons.
All of that is nice but how about the music? For this release Trent worked with the team of Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder with help from Alessandro Cortini, Adrian Belew and Brian Viglione. For the visual feel and aesthetic Trent worked once again with long time collaborator Rob Sheridan who in turn worked with Artist in Residence on the collection.
What you'll hear on the album is Elements from all of the NIN catalog dating back to The Downward Spiral fused with heavy amounts of modern computer crunchiness brought on by programs like Abelton Live mixed with moments of raw Einsturzende Neubauten like industrial rhythms and Skinny Puppy Brap like movements.
Upon 1st Listen some of the songs seem to short and have a feeling of being unfinished especially when taken out of context. But this collection of songs isn't meant for being on shuffle. It's a audio record of a 10 week period of experimenting and collaborating with friends that should be approached as more of an art piece than a pop record. Trent calls it a soundrack for Daydreams and that's truly the most appropriate thing you can say about it. So for the next 30 minutes or so, Do some daydreaming and I'll play you a fews cuts from Nine Inch Nails Ghosts Vol 1-4.
Enjoy!
Track List:
1. Nine Inch Nails - 20 Ghosts III - Ghosts I-IV
2. Nine Inch Nails - 01 Ghosts I - Ghosts I-IV
3. Nine Inch Nails - 13 Ghosts II - Ghosts I-IV
4. Nine Inch Nails - 18 Ghosts II - Ghosts I-IV

Bursting the bubble of young Rock Stars to be.
A friend of mine plays keyboards in the band The Postmarks. They released an album this year on the indie label Unfiltered Records which is marketed through Worlds Fair. They had a stand out single called "Goodbye" that was licensed for use in an episode of Greys Anatomy and gets regular air play in retail outlets like Urban Outfitters, Publix & Lowes. The band received lots of love from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Spin and even queen blogger Perez Hilton. They cracked the top 10 on the CMJ charts, did well at college radio and performed live on a few high profile radio shows including Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW. The band did a couple of small tours this year, opened for Apples in Stereo in their home town and even performed at Lollapalooza. It's been a good year for the band and reading this you'd think they were doing alright financially, but with all of that aside the guys and gal of The Postmarks are still holding down Day Jobs and going to School when they come back home.
Think about it. A band that gets heavy air play at college radio (there are over 500 college/community radio stations in the US) and is accessible enough to be heard while you're shopping for groceries and hardware barely makes enough money for the business of music making to be their career. It's their 2nd Job! And one that interferes with their primary job! This business is tough!
10 years ago I would of thought for sure that a band like them would of been living the dream; touring, making records, getting write-ups in magazines and air play on college radio. As it turns out though all of that isn't enough to sustain a living for a five piece band. Now think about the rest of the indie darlings out there who are doing the same thing. Again this business is tough.
This all comes to mind because A few days ago Kristen came home and told me that she heard our friends band playing on the PA while she was grocery shopping. Then yesterday I'm at Lowes picking up a new Marble windowsill for my kitchen window and I hear "Goodbye" playing over the speakers in between some schmaltzy pop song and Maroon 5. I couldn't help but think how much the music business was falling to crap. When you could get a new band into so many places and still no one is listening, no one is buying, it's just background.
Just some food for thought. Even when a band looks like they're making it, they're really just getting started.

DSP-041: Black Kids
Today on the show we're checking out Black Kids from Jacksonville, FL. They're an unsigned band with just a few live shows under their belt and a 4 song EP you can get for free off of Myspace. They've quite rapidly blown up on blogs around the world and got high marks from Pitchfork and NME. All the hype aside though, they're really good and really fun. They're getting comparisons to the Go Team and Arcade Fire, which is nice, but honestly I'm hearing a lot more Smiths and New Order. You be the Judge.
Track List:

Video: Efterklang - Mirador
Danish band Efterklang released their new album Parades yesterday, October 15th, and start a European Tour today. In honor of these festivities they also released this animated video for the song "Mirador" which is based off of the Albums artwork. Lots of "La Da-Duh-Da's" in this one while you follow the videos main character, a bird like creature with long legs, on what seems to be a very imaginative, yet fleeting journey. Kinda like being in the music business at times. ;)

08 October 2007: Big News
Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the
following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally
free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have
been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the
business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very
different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a
direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate.
Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008.
Exciting times, indeed.
posted by Trent Reznor at 10:45 AM. 484 Comments
I'm sure Tomorrows headlines will read something like:
"Shit now the TWO best bands in the world want nothing to with us, now what do we do?"
Now if Radiohead and NIN tour together next year I'm sure the heads of many people would explode!

Digitalism-Pogo Video
Artist: Digitalism
Song: Pogo
Album: Idealisim
Label: Kitsune/Virgin
The song "Pogo" from the German duo Digitalism, has been the most played song on my iPod for the past 2 months. I just can get enough of it's energy! It's Simple, Rocking, Danceable, Hooky and it just invites you to sing along, that is of course if you dig that sort of thing. The album Idealisim as a whole has been a favorite of mine at the Gym as well. I guess you could say I've become quite the fan. The video for Pogo, though not my favorite, (mainly because the intro is cut off as an effort, I'm guessing, to get more air play on TV in Europe.), is worth checking out none the less.

SMD Believe they can teach us to Hustle to the BEAT!
Nothing like watching poor people bust a move, Sluty hipster chicks make out and dudes freak out over colorization. Love the tunes, Videos are a bit out there.
Get familiar with the latest Electro duo out of the UK, Simian Mobile Disco. Here's 3 videos for 3 tunes off their debut Attack Decay Sustain Release out now on Wichita Recordings.
SMD-I Believe
SMD-Hustler
SMD-It's The Beat
What we learn from these video's is the following:
- You may have a dodgy car and teeth but you can still believe in believing.
- The new currency exchange for hipster girls who "Hustle" music from record stores is group make out sessions. Got it, noted.
- Some people just prefer to see things in black and white.

Port O'Brien-A real working class band
I found the band Port O'Brien this morning on the Filter Magazine blog and one thing they forgot to point out was the fact this was a real working class band. Although the band is based in Oakland, Ca, has a management team based in NYC, festival dates in England lined up for September and is loved by M. Ward they've still got bills to pay that aint being paid by their music. That's why 3/4's of the band have headed up to Alaska for the summer to work as Fisherman and Bakers. And they tell you all about here on their Port O'Brien, Alska Blog. Times they are tuff for us Musicians.

Hey everybody, Just finished listening to this podcast from KEXP featuring a live performance from Austin, Texas two piece Ghostland Observatory. WOW! Just a really fun mix of Rock and Electro. Think Prince & Daft Punk throwing down with Queen... Serious Good Times!
The Set runs just over 30 minutes so be patient with the download!
Artist/Band: Ghostland Observatory
Album: Live on KEXP
Label: Trashy Moped Recordings

Bio:
Ghostland Observatory is not a band, but an agreement between two friends to create something that not only heals their beat-driven hearts, but pleases their rock ‘n roll souls. Taking the working man’s approach, Ghostland Observatory spend countless hours in their south Austin studio. They have released two albums in less than a year, and have moved audiences from coast to coast with their live performances and unique style. Ghostland Observatory is the duo of front man Aaron Behrens and producer/drummer Thomas Turner. Behrens’ vocal style and stage performances are unique and uncompromising, and he has drawn early comparisons to Freddie Mercury and Prince. Turner is heavily influenced by electronic artists such as Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier and Green Velvet, as well as rockers such as The Animals, David Bowie, and The Clash. With their spectral blend of electronics, drums, guitar and vocals, they have emerged with a sound that is the culmination of past influence and present inspiration, and can only be described as BALLSY.

MP3: The Album Leaf - Always For You
The Album LeafInto the Blue Again
release date: September 12, 2006
Life as a traveling musician can become monotonous. Sleep, eat, perform. Load in, load out, pass out. Repeat. This is your day, and before you realize it, your life. After a decade of the three-step grind James LaValle—the classically trained multi-instrumentalist whose tone poems have been collated as The Album Leaf since 1999—decided to get off the well-worn path.
“A lot of traveling and time away from home, learning about yourself while losing yourself, that’s what has gone into recording for me,” says LaValle. “Following a year-and-a-half of straight touring I took a break from worrying only about where The Album Leaf was going and instead concentrated on the best parts of what it’s been this entire time.”
If musicians could keep time in a bottle its consumption would likely outpace vodka and bourbon combined within the first year. Next to a comfortable place to sleep, time is the luxury few touring musicians are afforded. Time alone is even more rare. Following stints with instrumental artisans Tristeza, post-hardcore spastics the Locust, contorted punk-funk ritualists GoGoGo Airheart, shadowy conjurers The Black Heart Procession and is often a special guest of Iceland’s celestial menagerie Sigur Rós, LaValle recognizes this lifestyle and its constraints.
Bottled up on the road long enough, LaValle felt the timing was right to give it a go from a different angle. Using time bought by the success of his Sub Pop debut, 2004’s In a Safe Place (which saw songs as the soundtrack to six episodes of The OC, and stints with CBS, NBC and Showtime). LaValle sequestered himself for six months in his San Diego house solely to write. This upswing of downtime resulted in his fourth full-length, Into the Blue Again.
At the core of The Album Leaf (named for a Chopin piece) has always been LaValle’s melodic daydreams personified. But while 2004’s In a Safe Place featured embellishments from members of Sigur Rós and Amina (the Sigur Rós string section), Into the Blue Again sees a return to The Album Leaf’s conception and LaValle handling virtually all of the instrumental duties. LaValle’s few collaborators on Into the Blue Again are Josh Eutis of Telefon Tel Aviv, who aided additional drum programming and engineering on choice songs, The Black Heart Procession’s Pall Jenkins adding vocal harmonies on "Wherever I Go," violinist Matt Resovich (who performs with The Album Leaf live, and also played on In a Safe Place), Drew Andrews adding additional guitar work on select songs (Drew also performs with The Album Leaf live) and Brigir Jon Birgisson, “Biggi,” engineer at Sigur Rós’ Sundlaugin studio.
Sundlaugin, also the studio used for In a Safe Place, is a former swimming pool turned into a primarily analogue recording facility. This contoured, textural environment lends itself well to LaValle’s lustrous, resounding palette. Wanting to employ his own equipment (not possible on the last record, recorded wholly in Iceland), LaValle loaded up a van and held his initial three-week tracking session with Ryan Hadlock at appropriately earthy Bear Creek Studio, a converted turn-of-the-century barn isolated outside Seattle. LaValle then took the concentric billows of feathered keyboards, filmy strings and chiseled drums to Iceland for three weeks of mixing to tape to maintain Brian Eno-informed translucence.
“Rough warmth, that’s a good description,” says Birgisson of LaValle’s intonation on Into the Blue Again. “The goal was to make sure you’re not overproducing to keep things live, organic and intimate.”
“I like drones and keeping notes intact,” admits LaValle. “A lot of times songs become written around a sound I feel is important and should not be forgotten. But I anchor them in a verse-chorus-verse structure. It helps focus the melodies.”
Indeed, personal focus has been LaValle’s primary objective with Into the Blue Again. The album’s 10 tracks exhibit an elegant, ascendant assurance informed by LaValle’s more settled relationships at home. While still delivering the placidity of a track such as album opener “The Light,” LaValle has composed even more corporeal, insistent cuts such as “Shine” and “Red-Eye.” Into the Blue Again also showcases LaValle’s increasingly confident, buoyant vocals striking heightened presence on unfeigned selections “Always for You,” “Writings on the Wall” and “Wherever I Go.” There is a greater sense of both the “I” and eye in the way LaValle lays out the topography of his pivotal past and makes it universally palpable.
“The Album Leaf is my little solo endeavor, my little toy,” says LaValle in summation. “It’s something to keep you happy when you’re alone and frustrated, and sometimes frustrating in itself when it doesn’t do exactly what you want. But still something fascinating.”
Having shared so much time and space with others on the road, LaValle proves with the personally charged Into the Blue Again that The Album Leaf resonates most profoundly when he goes it alone.
Look for The Album Leaf's gorgeous live show (it includes a large touring entourage involving projection art and live strings) in upcoming tours!

MP3: Snowden - Anti-Anti
Ocasionally the bio just gets it right. Here's a tune from Atlanta band Snowden that's been getting heavy rotation in the car as of late. Go ahead, just try and resist singing along.from jadetree.com:
Atlanta’s SNOWDEN drowns their brand of melodies in a sea of reverb heavy distortion and hypnotic layers. Anti-Anti (JT1115), the band’s debut album for Jade Tree, integrates the ethereal guitar resonance and dynamic percussion reminiscent of bands like RIDE, NEW ORDER and early CURE, with the volatility of contemporaries such as THE YEAH YEAH YEAHS. Combining a mix of tracks recorded by Erik Wofford (The Black Angels, Explosions in the Sky, My Morning Jacket) at Cacophony Recorders in Austin with tracks recorded and mixed by principal songwriter Jordan Jeffares, Anti-Anti finds Jeffares and company elevating their trademark sound into an unpredictable mix of dirty pop soundscapes. If post-shoegaze exists as a genre, then SNOWDEN is proving their contention for the upper ranks.

MP3: Brightblack Morning Light - Everybody Daylight

Artist/Band: Brightblack Morning Light
Track: Everybody Daylight
Album: Brightblack Morning Light
Label: Matador Records
Web: http://www.thebrightblackmorninglight.com/
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/brightblackmorninglight
Bio Info:
Stoned out Hippie Rock usualy isn't my thing, but these guys bring a touch of darkness that sucks me in everytime.
Comprised of Nathan Shineywater and Rachel Hughes, Brightblack Morning Light fuse smokey rhodes keys, reverb soaked blues guitars, hand claps, tasteful percussion and flutes together on their self titled debut for Matador records.
The Story on these two is they wrote this record while living technically homeless for 18 months in tents and communally in a shack in northern California in addition to the occasional rest stop I'm sure while touring with bands like Bonnie Prince Billy, White Magic, Women & Children, Papa M, Joanna Newsome, Vetiver, Entrance, Gojogo, Daniel Higgs' Magic Alphabet, Lungfish, and their UK debut at the Slint-curated All Tomorrow's Parties.
As I said, not usually my thing, but this song is quite irresistible. For a modern reference picture Zero 7 mixing it up with Spiritualized, Slowdive, Native American Tee-Pees and some peyote!
Enjoy!
