Video: LCD Soundsystem - "All My Friends" Live From Manchester

This is a great tune from LCD's Album Sound of Silver. You have to give credit to the guy playing the piano/keyboard part. It's so redundant, I would go crazy playing it my self... but front man James Murphy wouldn't have it any other way.

    Enjoy!

Bursting the bubble of young Rock Stars to be.

A friend of mine plays keyboards in the band The Postmarks. They released an album this year on the indie label Unfiltered Records which is marketed through Worlds Fair. They had a stand out single called "Goodbye" that was licensed for use in an episode of Greys Anatomy and gets regular air play in retail outlets like Urban Outfitters, Publix & Lowes. The band received lots of love from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Spin and even queen blogger Perez Hilton. They cracked the top 10 on the CMJ charts, did well at college radio and performed live on a few high profile radio shows including Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW. The band did a couple of small tours this year, opened for Apples in Stereo in their home town and even performed at Lollapalooza. It's been a good year for the band and reading this you'd think they were doing alright financially, but with all of that aside the guys and gal of The Postmarks are still holding down Day Jobs and going to School when they come back home.

Think about it. A band that gets heavy air play at college radio (there are over 500 college/community radio stations in the US) and is accessible enough to be heard while you're shopping for groceries and hardware barely makes enough money for the business of music making to be their career. It's their 2nd Job! And one that interferes with their primary job! This business is tough!

10 years ago I would of thought for sure that a band like them would of been living the dream; touring, making records, getting write-ups in magazines and air play on college radio. As it turns out though all of that isn't enough to sustain a living for a five piece band. Now think about the rest of the indie darlings out there who are doing the same thing. Again this business is tough.

This all comes to mind because A few days ago Kristen came home and told me that she heard our friends band playing on the PA while she was grocery shopping. Then yesterday I'm at Lowes picking up a new Marble windowsill for my kitchen window and I hear "Goodbye" playing over the speakers in between some schmaltzy pop song and Maroon 5. I couldn't help but think how much the music business was falling to crap. When you could get a new band into so many places and still no one is listening, no one is buying, it's just background.

Just some food for thought. Even when a band looks like they're making it, they're really just getting started.

    DSP-041: Black Kids

Today on the show we're checking out Black Kids from Jacksonville, FL. They're an unsigned band with just a few live shows under their belt and a 4 song EP you can get for free off of Myspace. They've quite rapidly blown up on blogs around the world and got high marks from Pitchfork and NME. All the hype aside though, they're really good and really fun. They're getting comparisons to the Go Team and Arcade Fire, which is nice, but honestly I'm hearing a lot more Smiths and New Order. You be the Judge.

    Track List:

    01. Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You - Wizard of Ahhhs EP
    02. Black Kids - Hurricane Jane - Wizard of Ahhhs EP
    03. New Order -Age of Consent-The Best of New Order

    Video: Efterklang - Mirador

Danish band Efterklang released their new album Parades yesterday, October 15th, and start a European Tour today. In honor of these festivities they also released this animated video for the song "Mirador" which is based off of the Albums artwork. Lots of "La Da-Duh-Da's" in this one while you follow the videos main character, a bird like creature with long legs, on what seems to be a very imaginative, yet fleeting journey. Kinda like being in the music business at times. ;)

    NIN Anounce Label Independence

    from http://www.nin.com

    08 October 2007: Big News

Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the
following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally
free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have
been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the
business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very
different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a
direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate.
Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008.
    Exciting times, indeed.

I'm sure Tomorrows headlines will read something like:
"Shit now the TWO best bands in the world want nothing to with us, now what do we do?"

Now if Radiohead and NIN tour together next year I'm sure the heads of many people would explode!

    Digitalism-Pogo Video

    Artist: Digitalism
    Song: Pogo
    Album: Idealisim
    Label: Kitsune/Virgin

The song "Pogo" from the German duo Digitalism, has been the most played song on my iPod for the past 2 months. I just can get enough of it's energy! It's Simple, Rocking, Danceable, Hooky and it just invites you to sing along, that is of course if you dig that sort of thing. The album Idealisim as a whole has been a favorite of mine at the Gym as well. I guess you could say I've become quite the fan. The video for Pogo, though not my favorite, (mainly because the intro is cut off as an effort, I'm guessing, to get more air play on TV in Europe.), is worth checking out none the less.

    - You may have a dodgy car and teeth but you can still believe in believing.
    - The new currency exchange for hipster girls who "Hustle" music from record stores is group make out sessions. Got it, noted.

Port O'Brien-A real working class band

I found the band Port O'Brien this morning on the Filter Magazine blog and one thing they forgot to point out was the fact this was a real working class band. Although the band is based in Oakland, Ca, has a management team based in NYC, festival dates in England lined up for September and is loved by M. Ward they've still got bills to pay that aint being paid by their music. That's why 3/4's of the band have headed up to Alaska for the summer to work as Fisherman and Bakers. And they tell you all about here on their Port O'Brien, Alska Blog. Times they are tuff for us Musicians.
